My last shot of 2016... the tradition continues

Have you noticed the amount of "top posts of 2016" out there right now? Everybody seems to have written one. For a while I was tempted... well, if everybody is doing it... right? Maybe I should too? But I resisted and instead continued with my last shot tradition.

Since 2010 I have been taking a photo on the last day of the year. It's my way of ending and starting the year creatively. Every year I have a plan and every year something happens that guides me from that plan to the actual image. My last shot this year was no exception. I had an idea all planned out in my head with a leaf I found that is shaped like a heart.

Those photos turned out nice but as the sun was setting I decided to try something else. And after many different tries, there it was: my last shot of 2016. A happy shade of green similar to Pantone's color of the year, the brilliant blue Denver sky, and a representation of my word for 2017: GROWTH.

I have seen a lot of people comment on how glad they were that the year ended, how terrible it was, etc. There were definitely several widespread lows but I'm choosing to focus on the positive.

For me 2016 was pretty good:

  • Completed my MFA in photography

  • I was awarded a grant for a photo project

  • Moved to Denver (although leaving California isn't something I include in the 'yay' column)

  • Continued to bond with Bruno

  • Bruno got to experience snow for the first time which was a joy for me, too

  • Visited my dad in Panama

  • Drove from San Diego to Denver

  • Started working with an art business coach

So, here's to 2017 and the possibilities it holds. My wish is that it brings LOTS of good stuff for all of us!
